Supporting the Community of Washington

Food Crisis Support

The Washington Community Food Project is a food bank covering the whole of Washington and Springwell, Tyne & Wear.

We are an independent charity, run solely by a team of dedicated volunteers. We rely on the goodwill and generosity of our local community for donations, in order to provide short-term, emergency food parcels, to those in need.

The amount of food we have in stock can vary and depends on the donations we receive. We are only able to share what we have, and so food parcels will vary from time to time and from site to site.

Who Can We Help?

We can help anyone who is struggling or in crisis and is referred to us by our support partners. You do not have to be receiving benefits, or unemployed – we support working people, students, those in retirement, but also those who are out of work or experiencing delays or sanctions from Universal Credit. We appreciate that regardless of an individual’s personal situation, anyone can fall on hard times.

What is a Food Bank?

Washington Community Food Project is a food bank. A food bank is a charity placed in communities to support families and individuals who may be experiencing a crisis or hardship which results in food insecurity. A food bank is different from a soup kitchen or community kitchen in that it provides clients with a parcel of food – mainly non-perishable items to take home rather than a cooked meal. WCFP also provides toiletries and washing detergent when available, and due to networks we have in the community we also provide fresh food and produce when available. We can also provide advice and signposting drawing on the local knowledge of our volunteers.
